Thomas Griffiths, The writing desk and its contents;

taken as a text for the familiar illustration of many important facts in natural history and philosophy, London: John W. Parker, 1844. 11 x 17 cms. 103 pages. £65 including postage and packing from ivor.st@talktalk.net, or 0208 883-6132.

Thomas Griffith was Professor of Chemistry at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital. He takes quills from various birds, pounce, glue, ink powder, sealing wax, black lead, wax tapers and a whole host of other materials to demonstrate a wide range of scientific phenomena. Even the wood of the desk gets analysed, whilst the new-fangled steel pen is used to demonstrate the phenomena of magnetism. The discussion is entirely non-technical.
