Services
The WES Library supports a number of member services including the provision of:
Bibliography and the WES Reference Archive
WES maintains one of the richest reference libraries of Writing Equipment materials, such as magazines, articles, advertising and marketing materials, pen repair manuals, pricelists, patents, etc., running to over 1300 titles. There is also a complete archive of WES Journal Articles since 1981.
The physical archive is available to visit, by appointment only, in Warwick, UK. Please contact the Librarian to arrange access. A significant proportion of the material is also available electronically and can be provided on request, subject to copyright and ‘fair dealing’ rules.
A Microsoft spreadsheet is available to download (link available below for logged in members), which contains a common bibliography of writing equipment and list of items held in the WES Reference Archive. Each spreadsheet line is given a WES accession number that can be used to reference the item for requests. The spreadsheet can be filtered by entry type (e.g. bibliography, physical copy, scanned, etc.), and can be searched using standard spreadsheet software.
We welcome additions to the Bibliography and to the Archive, especially when supplied in the required format. We have produced guidance on adding a Bibliography entry and digitising material for addition to the library, which can be downloaded below (link available below for logged in members).
Please note that the WES Library is ‘Not for Profit’ as defined under UK Copyright Law but that requests for information from the Archive will be handled consistent with ‘fair dealing’.
Past WES Journals
The Library holds printed stocks of most past Journals, which can be supplied to WES members at lower than the usual Journal list price. Where printed copies are no longer available, and the digital alternative is not suitable, a copy of the journal can be printed on demand.
Past WES Journals as electronic PDF files
All Journals can be provided to members as electronic PDF files but to protect copyright they can only be provided as single files and not as accumulations. Please note that all Journals are copyright of WES and the respective article authors.
Provision of WES Journal articles
An alphabetic list of articles published in the WES Journal is provided in the form of a searchable Microsoft WORD file, which is available to download (link available below for logged in members). The list can be searched using normal find utilities. The file is updated regularly but can be up to three Journals behind. In case of difficulty accessing the index, please email the Librarian.
The WES articles are also available online as downloadable PDF files for logged in members, on the WES website Article Index. There is a Search field provided which allows members to search for articles by title or by author.
Holding copies of the White Books
WES has produced a series of White Books, which are collections of reproduced journal articles on specific subjects. These are available to purchase through the WES shop while stocks last.
Holding copies of three WES booklets
WES has published three booklets: ‘Ensuring Your Collection is Safe’, ‘Disposing of Your Collection’, ‘Do You Want It Repaired or Restored?’, authored for WES by Jeremy Collingridge. Printed copies of these are available to purchase separately through the WES shop while stocks last. The leaflets are also available to members on request, as digital PDF files.
Holding stock of WES DVDs
WES has produced a number of DVDs featuring Dr. Jim Marshall. These are ’Collecting Old Writing Instruments’, ‘Parker Ball Pen Repair’, Parker Pencil Repair’, ‘Enjoying your Parker Duofold’ and ‘Enjoying Your Parker 51’. There is a further one introduced by Geoff Parker and delivered by Dave Ruderman (past Parker Heritage Director) of the WES AGM Address Nov 2015 on ‘The Mighty Parker Duofold’. These are available to purchase through the WES shop, while stocks last. The recordings are also available to view online, please contact the Librarian for details.
